Bellis Perennis – the Common Daisy

Common Daisy Doris Potter Only Natural

Submitted by Doris Potter

Do you remember from childhood past times, the playing with daisies or making daisy chains?

Can you put your foot on 7 daisies? According to a folklore saying: If you can, then summer surely has come.  I love the very common plants and knowing the mystery of their healing properties. Such a plant is the Common Daisy, growing in abundance all around us, but its very good healing properties are almost forgotten.

Its pretty flowers peep out from our lawns from early spring until late autumn. This plant has given its existence completely over to the course of the sun, even the day rhythm of light and dark is expressed in opening its petals in the morning and closing them in the evening. Is it surprising that “Daisy” is a shortened version of “Days-Eye” or that in the North Myths it is referred to as “Baldur’s eye”? Baldur being the Sun-god.

This little plant has not only an affinity to light and the sun, but also harbours an enormous amount of vitality. You mow it and already the next day it is there again.  Apparently its great healing qualities are equivalent to the nowadays better known Calendula or Arnica. It used to be called ”Bruisewort” or “Woundwort” indicating it’s use, also reduces bleeding. read more →

Your Local Food Network

Your Local Food Network

“Food is a currency of trust” – Richard McCarthy, Slow Food, USA

The idea for Your Local Food Network sprung from many hours spent propping up a coffee stall at our local farmer’s market. Like-minded friends gathered weekly to buy food from a spattering of local producers. We often asked ourselves why our market wasn’t a more lively and vibrant space. Shouldn’t we have more choice from local farmers and growers? Where are they? Why can’t we buy directly from them?
And so, hundreds of coffees and several pounds of cake later, Your Local Food Network was formed.

Its goal: to connect more people to local growers and farmers and encourage active collaboration.

Tina Wilkins wants to share with us some simple things that anyone can do to introduce some positive energy and healing into our daily lives. In today’s society I think we could all do with a bit of extra positivity and these tips added to over time won’t take much time out of your day but may make you feel that little bit more positive about life!

December

As the nights draw in and it gets colder, natures answer is to withdraw, to pull back from life and slumber until the spring dawns. This made me think about how unnatural our rhythm has become, how apart from nature. For whilst the natural state is to rest, majority of ‘us’ will be caught up in the Christmas rush or trying to cram as much into the daylight hours as we can.

Ger’s October 18 Monthly Update

Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural

I do love a good Show

The Vitality Expo in the RDS in early September (you know the one, I harped on incessantly to get you all to go!) was brilliant. For me some of the highlights included the zero waste talks which made me want more than ever to make that ethos central to Only Natural (watch this space, plans are afoot). The sooner the collective penny drops and we all realize that our use and throw away lifestyles just aren’t sustainable, the sooner we stand a chance of keeping our world habitable. Yes by all means get yourself a buy now trendy keep cup (and be proud that you did, the ocean is made up of drops) but see it as a jumping off point and let the consciousness slowly pervade your life, how you dress, what you eat, where you holiday, one facet at a time.

Bulk Buying by Liza

LIza Depenser pic
We are all looking for ways to save money when shopping. Many of the products we buy are contained in single use packaging that costs money and natural resources to make. So when you buy in bulk, you often eliminate the need for packaging, which has a positive impact on the environment. It is believed that plastic packaging can lead to ingestion of synthetic chemicals over time, so buying in bulk might also help preserve your health. read more →

Eco Friendly Bathing Habits by Liza Seavers

Swap shower gels for natural soap bars

Avoid soap containing unsustainable palm oil or those wrapped in plastic. Only Natural have beautiful, naturally fragranced unwrapped soaps from ‘Faith in Nature’ and also from an Irish owned company ‘Palm Free Irish Soap’. By opting for packageless or minimally packaged products the need for recycling is reduced. Obviously recyclable packaging is better than un-recyclables but the recycling process still puts a significant strain on the environment. Some cosmetic companies offer a refill service where you can top up your container at a discounted rate.

Try Shampoo Bars

Shampoo bars are also a greener option worth trying. Palm Free Irish Soaps have a bar called ‘Thyme Travel’. I love the fresh, natural scent of this bar. To use simply rub on dampened hair and work up a lather then wash out. The makers of this bar recommend rinsing with apple cider vinegar as a great natural conditioner and then treating the hair to a drop of argan oil. Friends of mine have tried this and they love it, unfortunately my hair is too fine but my husband tried the product and is now fully a converted shampoo bar devotee. read more →

Liza’s Green Living!

Liza's Living Green Only Natural

Liza Seavers, beauty salon owning, cat loving, marathon running, vegan shares her journey to’green living’ at home and in her Wexford salon Highbrow Beauty. In this blog she reveals her approach to tackling laundry the eco, cruelty free way using products that are tough on stains yet gentle on the environment and all available at Only Natural.

My green living lifestyle really took off when we built our house and opted to have solar panels installed. We are lucky enough to have 2 types which I scientifically call the ‘water heating panels’ and the ‘electricity making panels’. As a result our electricity making panels generate power when the sun is shining, this is when I schedule our washing machine to do it’s thing.

Ger’s September 2017 Update

Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural

We’ve got something to say!

Only Natural is evolving. We’ve made some big changes in the shop over the last year and our new shop front, which we hope you love as much as we do, is part of the same process. We thought long and hard to come up with our new motto ‘wholesome, sustainable, ethical’ and it’s meant to say loud and clear that, no matter how much we change, the core values that Only Natural is firmly grounded on remain the same as ever!
Only Natural
We stand for wholesome. We sell products that are natural and good and believe that their use promotes well being naturally.
We stand for sustainable. In a world where natural resources are being consumed at an alarming rate we sell products which, as far as possible, respect the natural environment rather than burdening the earth further.
We stand for ethical. We sell products which, to the best of our knowledge, don’t involve unnecessary exploitation of people, animals or of the earth.
