Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural

We’re bringing Dale Pinnock to Wexford

Dale Pinnock, UK celebrity chef, author and nutritionist has just updated and republished The Clear Skin Cookbook first brought out in 2012 and, in partnership with Viridian Nutrition, we’re delighted to be hosting Dale for a cookery demo highlighting the do’s and dont’s of his unique 60 day clear skin program on the 20th of August. There’s a bit of time to go yet so watch this space and final details of the event and how you can be there will be in our August newsletter. The program is a nutritional, supplemental and lifestyle guide for anyone suffering from skin issues like acne, eczema and psoriasis. We currently have copies of the book to give away in Only Natural (Ts & Cs apply, purchase necessary) and this month’s recipe is a small taster of how following Dale’s plan certainly needn’t be about self denial! Here’s an excerpt from Dale’s own story on Viridian’s website which explains just why skin problems are an issue so very close to his own heart.

Miso Soup, Simply Amazing

Miso Soup Only Natural
Continuing with our Japanese inspired blog I enjoyed lots of delicious, healthy miso soup during my time there and, now that I’m home I’m craving it already so I’m going to share the recipe. What better way to introduce Japan’s premier superfood into your diet. Miso provides immune and digestion boosting probiotics, nutritious protein, plus nutrients like copper, manganese and vitamin K. It’s reputed to have blood pressure controlling and cancer fighting properties. Once you add it to your diet you’ll quickly grow to love it’s deeply savory flavour. There are various types of miso from the darker saltier types to the sweeter white ones. Always make sure you’re buying an unpasteurized miso and never boil it as you destroy its properties by doing so. Try it in all sorts of soups and casseroles as well as dressings, marinades and spreads.

Mangan’s, Wexford’s Chip Shop with a difference!

Mangan's Traditional Fish & Chips Only Natural

I never thought I’d be reviewing a chipper for Only Natural but our food culture is changing and that’s exactly what I’m doing today. I recently had a chat with Geraldine, the owner of Mangan’s in The Faythe because I’m fascinated by just how much she’s taken the idea of traditional chip shop fare (not the healthiest of cuisines) and substantially changed it to reflect today’s changing tastes and dietary choices. Geraldine was certainly ahead of the curve when she decided to overhaul her menu in favour of healthier options in June 2016. She was certainly the first in Wexford to realize that she could attract a broader audience by offering healthier and vegetarian choices beside traditional chip shop fare. What’s exciting is just how successful her initiative has been with the result that she’s still adding to the choices on offer. She’s effectively broadened her restaurant’s appeal to include those of us who want the convenience and tastiness of a take away now and again but without the heart clogging downside. We applaud you Geraldine.

What’s on the menu at Mangan’s?

Medicinal Mushrooms, Ancient Healing for the Modern World

Medicinal-Mushrooms-1

The use of medicinal mushrooms for healing and health enhancement goes back millennia in eastern cultures but relatively little is known about their properties and benefits in the west. Until recently that is, as health scientists have taken a serious interest in their uses and beneficial properties. We’ve just taken on a range in the form of dried mushroom powders and, as we’re keen to recommend them where appropriate, have been doing our research. The Company’s called Om Organic Mushroom Nutrition and they’re based in California. Their remit is to organically grow and minimally process (low temperature drying and powdering) the most potent medicinal mushrooms on the planet. They sell them individually and in combinations. Here’s some information I found on the web on just three of them Reishi, Chaga and Cordyceps.

Reishi

In China known as the “Mushroom of Immortality”, “The Great Protector” and “The Herb of Good Fortune” Modern Science is now validating these curious names given to what is truly an extraordinary substance. Reishi is one of the most researched herbal substances on the planet. Terry Willard’s book “Reishi: Mushroom of Spiritual Potency and Medical Marvel” sums up for us what numerous Modern Scientific Studies have revealed about Reishi. The following properties are all attributed to this amazing mushroom.

Baobab, why we should be using this little known superfood

Aduna_Baobab_Hanging_Fruit
Recently covered by Channel 4’s ‘Superfoods : The Real Story’, the properties of Baobab are likely to make it hugely popular in the very near future. Grown in South Africa the Baobab is the fruit of a tree. Traditionally used and revered for its health giving properties by the local population it’s harvested when the fruits dry naturally on the tree and then fall to the ground. The contents of the fruit are then ground into a powder whose properties qualify it as a real superfood!
Like other Superfoods baobab’s nutritional benefits are huge. It’s a vitamin C powerhouse for immune health, a source of soluble and insoluble fibre to maintain good digestion and healthy cholesterol levels, as well is a rich source of prebiotics to keep our gut bacteria healthy with all the benefits that come with that.
However Channel 4 stressed another of the fruit’s benefits, it’s ability to regulate blood sugars and in a population where sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diet are leading to a veritable diabetes epidemic this could be huge.

Fabrizio’s (from Nua Naturals) Top Six Superfoods

Top 6 Superfoods Heading Image

After my chat with Fabrizio Marini and Jane Carroll for our Therapist of the Month blogpost I asked Fabrizio to tell me what he considers to be his top Superfoods and how he likes to use them. You’ll be glad to see that these amazing foods can be introduced to your daily diet with no greater effort than mixing them into a juice, smoothie, breakfast cereal or soup. It’s so easy yet the benefits can be huge! Here are Fabrizio’s top six superfoods.

So what is a superfood?

A superfood can essentially be classified as any food item that contains an extremely dense concentration of vital nutrients, vitamins and/or minerals, as well as antioxidants, good fats and healthy enzymes.  It is for this reason that we call such foods Super.

I for one firmly believe in food as our source of minerals and vitamins and always try my absolute best to add nutrient dense foods to my daily food intake. For sure at times we may find ourselves lacking and will need to supplement in very specific circumstances (always supplement under read more →

Recipe of the Month – Bone Broth

Bone broth, the elixir of life?

Receipe of the Month Bone Broth
If you’re vegetarian or vegan look away now, this post isn’t for you. Bone broth is nothing more than a long simmered soup made from animal or fish bones plus vegetables and other seasonings if you like. It’s nothing new and forms part of practically every culture’s native culinary traditions. Our parents and grandparents certainly made soup from animal leftovers and now it seems that nutritionists are linking regular consumption of this with many, many benefits.

Here are the main benefits that I’ve come across.

1. Heal and seal your gut. According to Jill Grunewald, a holistic nutrition coach and founder of Healthful Elements, a cup a day works miracles for leaky gut syndrome but it’s also good for protecting non-leaky guts. The gelatin in the bone broth (found in the knuckles, feet, and other joints) helps seal up holes in intestines. This helps cure chronic diarrhea, constipation, and even some food intolerances.

2. Protect your joints. Taking glucosamine supplements to help with joint pain has been common knowledge for years, but it turns out that bone broth has glucosamine too. But unlike pills, the broth also includes a host of other goodies that help keep your joints happy, healthy, and pain-free. The chondroitin sulfate in bone broth has been shown to help prevent osteoarthritis.
