A natural tan (with or without the sun)

It’s been a harsh winter and I’d like to think that, if there is any justice, a great summer complete with all the benefits of getting out of doors more, is on the way. Many of us will think of how to get that summer sun kissed look but because (a) there are no guarantees of sun in Ireland and, (b) when it does show its face, we have to be so careful about being safe in the sun, I think it’s wise to have a plan B in place. Many people turn to tanning products to get the look without sun or sunbed. But even here care is needed as many of the mainstream tanning products are so full of chemicals that, when you consider that what you put onto your skin inevitably passes into your bloodstream, you might feel it best to avoid them.

With this dilemma in mind we’ve just taken on some of the Eco Tan by Sonya range. Eco Tan by Sonya is Australia’s first all natural and organic tanning product range. A lot of great products seem to be coming from down under recently, we love Sukin bodycare, Boody bamboo clothes and, of course, Australian Bush Flower essences for our emotional wellbeing! Anyway I digress……..
As is often the case the range was born out of need (and indeed crisis) in the life of its founder Sonya Driver. Here’s the story.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Eight years ago, Sonya Driver was a wife, a mother and a sister. She had the world at her feet and a great sense of self worth. She had just bought a beachside block of land with her husband to build their dream house and left her job as an international flight attendant to be a full time mother.

Sonya’s world was turned upside down when her husband called and said the marriage was over. She was suddenly abandoned, unemployed and living in a run- down house. Sonya was left to raise her girls alone. To add to a dire situation, her gentle- spirited sister was diagnosed with a melanoma. In an attempt to lift her faith and be a strong, positive influence over her fragile sister, Sonya began a new life.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_single_image image=”11809″ img_size=”full” style=”vc_box_outline” border_color=”green”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]She got up from the ground and spent two weeks volunteering in East Timor, where she fed hungry children and comforted the sick. She shampooed the hair of women who had never before had their hair washed. After two weeks living in a desolate village with little food or water, Sonya was distracted from her grim situation at home. Surrounded by people who had nothing, she was able to put her situation in perspective.

Sonya returned to the Gold Coast determined to make a positive change and support her sister, whose cancerous growth had been cut from her arm, leaving a horrible scar.

Still wanting to get a tan without the risk of harmful UV rays, they sought the next best thing. Sonya and her sister began getting regular spray tans together but soon became concerned about the ingredients they were constantly covering themselves with. Sonya began to research the ingredients used by many different brands, regardless of their claims. She says it only took her a few minutes to decide not to use their products anymore. After all, our skin is our largest organ, and much of what we put on it is absorbed into our bloodstream.

Sonya threw herself into making a true organic tanning range made from cacao, flower essence, chamomile and all things natural and organic.

In 2011, Eco Tan made Australian history by becoming the first and only tanning manufacturer to be certified organic by the Organic Food Chain under the Australian government.”

So armed with our first sample and thrilled that we’d found a range that was 100% natural, vegan and vegetarian and absolutely ethically produced, we asked Michelle to do a small trial run. Here’s what she thought….[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]”It’s been a long winter alright and my body is physically aching for some sunshine, the holidays are booked so sunshine is on the cards, just five more weeks to go!!  With my Irish complexion I may not look like I need sunshine to keep me happy and balanced but my annual 10 days away in the Spanish climate really help keep my household in harmony. So I’ve five whole weeks to wait and I’m fed up with my blue complexion so when we were asked who wanted to try out the new fake tan range I insisted it be me!

The instructions instructed to exfoliate 24-48 hours beforehand, so me being me I decided to go middle of the road and I waited 36 hours before trying the Invisible Tan.   I have to say as soon as I saw it was a whitish cream I was a bit dubious, I don’t like putting on a tan I can’t see going on! But on I ploughed and being a cream it went on quite easy, I made sure to rub it in well and it was easy and smooth to blend in.  Only eight hours to wait until I’m transformed into a bronzed Goddess!!  The result – a light golden tan which suits my skin tone perfectly.  To be honest I was a bit worried what the end result might be as it said to suit golden/olive toned skin – which I certainly do not have!!  But apparently this tanning cream works with your skin pigmentation so I had nothing to worry about.

It’s amazing what a bit of colour on your body can do for your mood – I wasn’t quite the bronzed Goddess, but I had a bit of a glow about me.  Now if only the weather would allow me to actually bare some skin!”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
