February is traditionally and symbolically seen as the beginning of Spring in Ireland. New growth may not be immediately visible under cover of the ground, but the impulse to create new shoots has begun. This is the month when we will see new lambs literally springing in the fields, running in joyous groups, excited to be together, alive!
The King of Cups sits on his throne surrounded by water, but not quite coming into contact with it. He may have temporarily retreated from the material world. His vision of life and immense knowledge comes from his own subconscious exploration of the Self. He is looking further, wider and deeper than usual. He is finding new ways to awaken the creative powers and to create Hope. Such inspiration can be achieved by breaking down the boundaries which obstruct clear passage and by the removal of creative and emotional blockages. Accepting that the small irritations of life do not always mirror the big picture can be a step toward emotional freedom and clarity of thought, allowing the true passions and desires to take hold and grow into something more substantial.
This King guides us through the turbulent waters as we move from Aquarius into Pisces. The swiftly changing energies of early February will eventually settle down into a more stable, rational and healthy routine. What may appear to some as a momentary lull, others can feel as if they are stuck in the doldrums. This too will pass, and swiftly! The movement from calm to turbulent to settled, provides us an opportunity to discover our underlying influences and create a new revitalised self. Minor corrections combined with a renewal of values and desires will allow us to transcend spiritually and emotionally.
The King reminds us that we are on a quest, a journey of experience through Life, Mind and Spirit. Even when we feel the power of our own authority, sometimes we would be better served by following the object of our own desire, cutting free the preference or requirement to lead, monarch transformed to follower.
Soul cleansing sacrifices can be encouraged in order to make room for new energies to be absorbed. These exciting new inputs can only enter if we release the less worthy feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Change the Paradigm – those structures which create our external appearance by mirroring our internal experience. These are the unhealthy early influences which used to make us react in particular ways. They are the opinions, judgements and pronouncements which add to or initiate conflict, low self esteem and fears
Comparing our Divine goal of immortality with the insecure existence of short lived things opens up a new path of knowledge, allowing the passions within to influence the the world around you, creating a new reality. So says the King! The “I think” of this month’s beginning magically transforms into the “I believe” of the month’s end, confirming your own self-fulfilling prophesy: “What you are doing is working.”
In earlier times this card was associated with the Emperor Charlemagne (742 – 814), not merely a conqueror, he was also known as a spiritual leader, a supporter of education and an advocate of chivalry; small acts of kindness. The King of Cups tells us that by attempting to master personal propriety, releasing fears and working with our heartfelt aspirations we can achieve unlimited spiritual elevation. Maybe we can find our personal answer to the muddled question of “Where does true happiness lie?”
