Baobab, why we should be using this little known superfood

Aduna_Baobab_Hanging_Fruit
Recently covered by Channel 4’s ‘Superfoods : The Real Story’, the properties of Baobab are likely to make it hugely popular in the very near future. Grown in South Africa the Baobab is the fruit of a tree. Traditionally used and revered for its health giving properties by the local population it’s harvested when the fruits dry naturally on the tree and then fall to the ground. The contents of the fruit are then ground into a powder whose properties qualify it as a real superfood!
Like other Superfoods baobab’s nutritional benefits are huge. It’s a vitamin C powerhouse for immune health, a source of soluble and insoluble fibre to maintain good digestion and healthy cholesterol levels, as well is a rich source of prebiotics to keep our gut bacteria healthy with all the benefits that come with that.
However Channel 4 stressed another of the fruit’s benefits, it’s ability to regulate blood sugars and in a population where sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diet are leading to a veritable diabetes epidemic this could be huge.

Therapist of the Month – Acupuncturist & Herbalist Atara Noiade

Atara Noiade no longer works from Only Natural

Atara Noiade

We’re always excited when a new therapy option becomes available so when Atara Noiade introduced herself to us recently we were more than happy to invite her to work from Only Natural’s therapy room.
Atara hails from the US and is a practitioner of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbalism. Acupuncture forms the basis of traditional Chinese Medicine and consists of the insertion of very thin needles at specific body points. This is to facilitate the smooth and balanced flow of Qi (body energy, pronounced Chee) along channels called meridians just beneath the surface of the skin. The purpose of this is to bring the body back into balance and relieve minor, and not so minor, ailments. According to Atara’s own website “the effectiveness of acupuncture is well documented and is endorsed as a system of primary health care by the World Health Organization.”  Although acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief Atara lists the following as disorders that can also be helped by the technique : Insomnia, stress/tension, fatigue, palpitations, arthritis and joint problems, headaches and migraines, diabetes, IBS, PMS, smoking, sciatica, visual problems, infertility and bladder/kidney problems. read more →

Healthy Heart Naturally – more than COQ10 and Fish Oils Supplements?

heart-health-image

As Ireland continues on the road to becoming Europe’s most obese nation avoidable deaths and diminished quality of life due to heart disease are still part of our health climate. Better heart health is achievable through lifestyle choices and, where applicable, preventative and remedial supplementation. Coronary heart disease involves damage and narrowing of arteries and veins resulting in the heart having a more difficult job to fulfill its function of pumping blood around the body resulting in an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Firstly reduce your exposure to the risk factors that predispose to heart disease. These include being overweight, smoking, excessive stress, insufficient exercise, raised cholesterol and diabetes.

A heart healthy diet includes lots of whole grains and vegetables, healthy fats from fish and vegetable sources, soluble fibre to both regulate the digestion and reduce cholesterol (oats and oat products like oat bran and oatcakes come to mind here) and heart healthy herbs such as garlic and turmeric.
Hawthorn is a very effective and quick acting remedy for high blood pressure.
If elevated cholesterol is a problem due to lifestyle or hereditary causes Red Yeast Rice (taken with COQ10 which is sometimes included in the supplement), Plant Sterol tablets (Irish made brand Zerochol comes to mind) and Soya Lecithin can all be beneficial.
