Life Changing Bread

Sarah Britton My New Roots
“It took me a long time to settle on the title for this post. Why? Because it’s quite a statement to suggest that a humble loaf of bread will change your life.” So said Canadian Holistic Nutritionist Sarah Britton in her My New Roots blog when she first posted the recipe that I’m going to share here today.I can see where she’s coming from and don’t think the name’s too exaggerated at all.
Why? Because for most of us, me included, bread is at the heart of our diets and so of our lives. It makes sense so that, if we can make that bread as nutritionally dense as possible and replace lots of the less nutritious bread we eat with it, then it’s going to make big changes for the better in the way we feel. So according to Sarah here is that loaf, it has no downside. read more →

Miso Soup, Simply Amazing

Miso Soup Only Natural
Continuing with our Japanese inspired blog I enjoyed lots of delicious, healthy miso soup during my time there and, now that I’m home I’m craving it already so I’m going to share the recipe. What better way to introduce Japan’s premier superfood into your diet. Miso provides immune and digestion boosting probiotics, nutritious protein, plus nutrients like copper, manganese and vitamin K. It’s reputed to have blood pressure controlling and cancer fighting properties. Once you add it to your diet you’ll quickly grow to love it’s deeply savory flavour. There are various types of miso from the darker saltier types to the sweeter white ones. Always make sure you’re buying an unpasteurized miso and never boil it as you destroy its properties by doing so. Try it in all sorts of soups and casseroles as well as dressings, marinades and spreads.

Wexford Skin Clinic is 2 Years Young!!!

Ger's May Update Belinda Kehoe

It’s no secret that we’ve always been a fan of our close neighbour Belinda Kehoe of Wexford Skin Clinic and after just recently moving into their larger, glitzy new premises on Wexford Quayfront we asked Belinda to tell us a bit about her approach on how to truly have healthy skin.

On March 30th, 270 women joined us in the Riverbank House Hotel to celebrate our 2nd birthday and just 10 days later we took up residence in our shiny, new clinic on Wexford quayfront, so all in all it’s been an exciting few weeks.
Obviously our main aim is to achieve results for our clients, whether it’s Acne, psoriasis, rosacea or plain old dull skin, we have many tools to achieve our clients goals.

We view the Skin as a multi-layered organ and we treat those many layers with a Feed, Fortify, Finish approach.

Give Your Liver A Helping Hand This Christmas!

Give your liver a helping hand

The season of indulgence is on us and indulgence inevitably leads to stress for the liver and possibly also for the waistline so this year why not take a few simple steps to boost your liver’s function before Christmas? We’re on a mission in Only Natural, we just did some great training with Caroline Harmer who works with Renew Life UK, the leaders in natural health supplements for digestion and metabolism and here’s Caroline’s considered take on what you can do right now to guarantee a happier, healthier Christmas and beyond.

Looking after your liver during the Christmas party season

Many people find themselves thinking about cleansing in January and detoxing their liver following the Christmas festivities. But there are things you can do to support your livers health while indulging in festive food and drink.

The liver is your major detoxification organ, performing over 500 functions in the body. Even with healthy organic eating, purified water, restful sleep, and regular physical activity, in today’s modern world the liver requires additional support to keep up with everyday stressors, environmental pollution, and chemical toxins.

Viridian Natural Health Summit 2016

Viridian Natural Health Summit 2016

Road Trip Time!

It’s well known that we love the big hearted brand Viridian here in Only Natural so when we were invited to their Natural Health Summit in London recently we knew we had to attend!

Viridian are known for doing things right – the company was founded on two fundamental principles; to develop a range of supplements with the highest possible ethical standards and to generate significant funds for children’s and environmental charities – so we knew their health summit would be no different.  It was an all-day event with a host of inspirational, world-leading experts.  The theme of the day was Transformation – transforming the health of people, lives, society, future generations and the planet.  So with that Nichola and Michelle headed off with open minds, hoping to come back all inspired.

The first and fourth speaker of the day was Deanna Minich and she was discussing ‘The Science of Colour and the Art of Healing’ and then delving into this in more detail in her afternoon talk on ‘Phytonutrients: Latest Science and Clinical Application.

Viridian Natural Health Summit Deanna MinichAccording to Deanna ‘We can think of food as pure physical nourishment – to give us the calories we need to function – to move, speak or think.  Or, we can expand our vision to encompass eating as something that connects us to our inner and outer landscapes – our emotions, creativity, mind, heart, truth, expression, intuition, and need for connection with the environment, people, animals, plants, earth, water, planet and universe.

Featured Therapist – Kinesiologist Nuala Sammon

Holistic health imageNuala Sammon RGN Dip AK is a Systematic Kinesiologist whom I went to visit in her own home a few miles outside Enniscorthy in late January. Her background is interesting in that Nuala is both a highly specialised nurse in a Dublin hospital as well being an alternative practitioner. For me at least the obvious passion and integrity that Nuala brings equally to both aspects of her therapeutic life give me great confidence in her motivations. Nuala’s primary diagnostic tool is that of muscle testing, a non invasive method of determining both the current level of function of the bodily systems and the appropriateness of specific remedies for patients. Working with her observations based on muscle testing Nuala recommends both nutritional supplements for their effects on the physical level and vibrational, energetic remedies such as Australian Bush Flower remedies for their emotional and spiritual healing properties.

According to the website of the Association of Systematic Kinesiology in Ireland, of which both Nuala and Finola Foley who practices in Fethard on Sea and who was our featured therapist a few months ago are members

“Systematic Kinesiology can help with more than 80% of all the health problems that most people put up with, either because it isn’t bad enough to go to the doctor, or because they have sought help but received no relief.

Almost everyone you know suffers from some sort of discomfort as a result of stress. As many as 50% of people suffer from back ache at one time or another, almost everyone gets colds or the flu.  Just feeling unwell, or a bit tired, seems almost to be the norm.

It need not be! Systematic Kinesiology can help you balance your body’s systems, and enjoy a level of health and well-being you may not have experienced since you were a child.”

kinesiology imageKinesiology offers gentle and effective treatments for many health problems such as Headaches, Food Intolerances, Digestive Problems, Bloating, Neck & Shoulder Problems, Sinusitis, Pain, Sleep Problems, Learning Difficulties, Reflux, Fatigue, Anxiety, Fears & Phobias and Vertigo.

Here’s Nuala’s own take on what she offers:

Raw Milk, the Benefits!

Fermoy Natural Cheese Co image
We had been looking for a supplier of raw unpasteurized milk and dairy products for some time and are delighted to have discovered The Fermoy Natural Cheese Co. (check them out on Facebook), who are now supplying us with raw milk and hopefully soon raw cheese, yoghurt and kefir. Anna Skrine who works with us as a naturopath and food intolerance tester is also an advocate of the benefits of raw milk and here’s Anna’s take on just why it’s so much more wholesome and beneficial than the pasteurized version:

Anna-Skrine-photoWonderful News – Live Raw Milk is now available in Only Natural!

Live Raw Milk is a wonderful food source, and delicious! It is how nature intended it to be, and is alive because the natural lactic acid bacteria are still in it; and it is they that help you both to digest the milk, and make it easy to assimilate (i.e. absorb) into the body and use the calcium in the milk. Live raw milk has natural probiotics, such as such as lactobacillus acidophilus. The fats in raw milk, which are in their natural form (and so again easy to use in the body), contain all the fat-soluble vitamins – Vitamin A, D, E and K. The milk fat also contains Omega 3, and CLA (Omega 6), which has anti-carcinogenic properties, and incidentally is often used in products used for slimmers. In fact, the fat is the most important part of the milk! Live raw milk also contains Vitamin C and B vitamins.

Time to Renew

Young woman holding a red apple below her belly button.

Digestion and elimination! Yes I’m on my soapbox again, effective digestion and effective elimination are the two cornerstones of good health and when they break down due to poor diet or lifestyle choices that’s when the whole gamut of diseases we think of as ‘modern’ illnesses (inflammation of skin, joints or digestive system) kick in and take their toll.
So it’s a new year, Christmas was a blast hopefully, but now it’s time to look forward, get into shape and feel good in 2016.

Enter Renew Life. This is a Company who’s products we only took on in a serious way this year but already we love them and are seeing real results. As with many very successful companies this one was born from the experiences and drive of one person and has chosen to specialise in one area, in this case digestion and elimination. They’ve chosen to make a small and highly specialized product range where quality and effectiveness are paramount. Of the vast number of probiotics on the UK market Renew Life’s Ultimate Flora Critical Care took the accolade for Harper’s Bazaar Best Probiotic 2015 which says a lot!

To understand what makes Renew Life a special company, one must first know the story of Brenda Watson, who founded Renew Life in 1997. Suffering from poor health and chronic aliments, Brenda began her journey towards better health by embracing the philosophies of Bernard Jensen (a holistic nutritionist and pioneer in the health field). She quickly realized that through cleansing and proper dietary choices, her health was improving for the better.
