Road Trip Time!

It’s well known that we love the big hearted brand Viridian here in Only Natural so when we were invited to their Natural Health Summit in London recently we knew we had to attend!

Viridian are known for doing things right – the company was founded on two fundamental principles; to develop a range of supplements with the highest possible ethical standards and to generate significant funds for children’s and environmental charities – so we knew their health summit would be no different.  It was an all-day event with a host of inspirational, world-leading experts.  The theme of the day was Transformation – transforming the health of people, lives, society, future generations and the planet.  So with that Nichola and Michelle headed off with open minds, hoping to come back all inspired.

The first and fourth speaker of the day was Deanna Minich and she was discussing ‘The Science of Colour and the Art of Healing’ and then delving into this in more detail in her afternoon talk on ‘Phytonutrients: Latest Science and Clinical Application.

Oliver McCabe’s Protein Punch Energy Smoothie

It’s getting close to the time when juicy, delicious, sunkissed Wexford strawberries will be found in abundance on the road sides the length of the country and we think this Oliver McCabe smoothie recipe is one to be kept on hand.  Not only do strawberries taste of summer but they are also an excellent source of antioxidant-promoting Vitamin C and keeping with our Healthy Skin theme this month Vitamin C is essential for healthy skin repair and growth.

This recipe is high in plant protein, essential fats, dietary fibre, magnesium and antioxidants plus to boost the skin loving effect of this smoothie even more we added a tablespoon of Udo’s Choice oil, however any essential fatty acid oil such as flaxseed, hemp oil or a fish oil could be added.

This recipe is enough for 3 tumbler glass size portions


400ml unsweetened almond milk

7 strawberries, topped and tailed

1 1/2 bananas, peeled

1/4 mango, peeled and stoned

1 heaped tablespoon hemp or pea protein

1 teaspoon golden flaxseed

1/2 teaspoon spirulina powder

Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend for 20 seconds.  Pour into a glass and serve immediately. And enjoy the taste of summer!

Skincare From The Inside

As summer comes ever nearer it’s natural to start thinking about skin health and about how to look our best for the months of better weather and outdoor leisure. Any drive towards improving skin health should start with a nutritional assessment. Are we eating right to feed the skin and, if not, how can we change that? Are we drinking enough water for hydration? Are we exercising enough to promote proper elimination through the other channels because, don’t forget, the skin is our largest organ of elimination? Are we smiling enough? I believe it’s a way better facial exercise than a grimace😀
What follows is a bit more specialist as we take you on a tour of the supplements that science has shown to be beneficial for different aspects of skin health and what we can realistically expect from them.

collagen & hyaluronicCollagen is the most predominant protein in the human body and studies show that taking a collagen supplement literally ‘plumps up’ the skin’s dermis layer improving skin elasticity and hydration and improving wrinkle depth into the bargain.

Hyaluronic Acid, which can absorb 3,000 times its own weight in water, is an important hydrating agent for the body’s tissues. It has a high daily turnover so large amounts may be needed for maintenance. The decline in Hyaluronic acid which accompanies aging has been proposed as a causative factor for the dryness and wrinkling that is characteristic of aging skin.
