An Essential Day Out for the Girls

Atlantic Aromatics Day Only Natural

Atlantic Aromatics set up in business in 1985, the same year that Only Natural did, and we’ve been proud to stock their top quality essential oils from the beginning. On Sunday the 9th of July we had a wonderful opportunity to attend a training day given by the company in Wicklow. Michelle, Ruth and Kim popped off for a delightfully scented and sensuous educational day. Here’s Michelle’s account of how they got on.

With the sun shining the three of us headed off towards Greystones quite early for a Sunday morning.  But hey we were happy to take one for the team as we knew more than likely it was going to be a day of sunshine, beautiful aromas and knowledge and what girl doesn’t want to know how to make her own chemical-free but oh so indulgent body products.

Ger’s April Update

Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural

So what’s happening in Only Natural this month??

Do you really want to lessen your environmental impact?

We posted on Facebook a while ago about a visit to Dublin by Bea Johnson whose passion is to encourage exactly that, minimum use of packaging and better awareness of individual contribution to global waste. The meeting was thronged and among the throng was our own Ruth. Ruth is already passionate about these issues and even more so now after hearing this inspirational woman speak. She’s also sparked us to think of ways in which we, as a business, can promote a greater awareness and practical solutions in Wexford so watch out for updates. Here’s Ruth’s resume of the talk.

Shake that Boody!!

Boody Image1

Bamboo, love it, wear it!

Bamboo is an extraordinary plant. Did you know that there is one Japanese species which has been recorded as growing over 3 feet in a day so, if that’s not a renewable resource, I don’t know what is!

Boody logoWe recently came across the Boody range of bamboo body wear and are really excited to have it in stock now. We have mens and womens, tshirts, camis, leggings, socks and underwear so call instore to see them for yourself . I loved it from the first touch, it feels extraordinarily comfortable, almost silky, to wear. Then come the other benefits.
It’s highly breathable, you keep cool in summer and warm in winter. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties helping to keep you fresh all day.Sweaty feet could be a thing of the past. It’s moisture wicking. Bamboo shunts water away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable. It offers UV protection keeping out 97.5% of harmful UV rays making it great for travel and sport. It’s hypo allergenic and allows the skin to breathe and its anti static properties mean it won’t cling to the body, great for sensitive skin.

So far so good but what about the environmental impact? Don’t worry this is where I think it gets super impressive!

The high growth rate of bamboo and the fact that it can grow in such diverse climates makes the plant a sustainable and versatile resource. It can be continually re-harvested with no damage to the surrounding environment.

Bamboo requires only one-time planting and very little care and maintenance. In a time when land use is under enormous pressure, bamboo’s high yield per hectare becomes extremely significant.

Bamboo’s extreme growth minimizes CO2 and generates up to 35% more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees. It’s an ally against global warming.

Bamboo Trees image

It’s increased use will help to slow down deforestation by providing an alternative source of timber for the construction industry and cellulose fiber for the textile industry.

Some studies indicate that cotton is the largest user of water among all agricultural commodities. Compare bamboo to cotton – a thirsty crop… It can take more than 5,000 gallons of water to produce a bit more than 2 pounds of cotton and 73% of the global cotton harvest comes from irrigated land. Bamboo on the other hand requires only 130 gallons of water to produce 3 pounds and requires no irrigation at all.

Yearly replanting of crops such as cotton leads to widespread soil erosion. Bamboo’s root system, on the other hand, combats soil erosion like no other plant can.

It’s completely biodegradable, having reached the end of its useful life, clothing made from bamboo can be composted and disposed of in an organic and environmentally friendly manner.

Boody Socks imageLess chemical use. A significant benefit of using bamboo as the organic base for textile fibers is that there is no need for pesticides or fertilizers when growing it. Boody yarn is certified organic by OCIA (The Organic Crop Improvement Association). Bamboo also contains a substance called bamboo-kun – an antimicrobial agent that gives the plant a natural resistance to pest and fungi infestation.

We hope you’ll be tempted to try bamboo wear for yourself. Not only is it stylish and way better for you than synthetics but it’s also one more way to make a positive global difference.
