Ger’s September 19 Monthly Update

Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural
Zero waste week 2019 runs from the 2nd to the 6th of September (apparently it’s a short week!) so we’d like to remind you of just how we have and are trying to make zero waste living more of an accessible option locally here in Wexford. Living life without generating unnecessary plastic waste isn’t easy, it takes planning and effort but please don’t be put off by that, if you start by doing a little more and by being a little more conscious today then you can do more again tomorrow. Change has to start sometime! read more →

Rob Greenfield – How To Be The Change In A Messed Up World

I-must-give-all-of-myself-now-or-risk-not-having-done-enough
On a sunny Sunday in early April, myself and Ciarán headed to Common Ground in Bray to meet environmental activist, Rob Greenfield. The room was bursting at the seams with avid listeners and there was a tangible feeling that maybe, just maybe, a change is coming. Maybe we can turn back the clock on all the environmental destruction we’ve caused.

We’ve followed Rob’s work for a few years now. He first came onto our radar in 2013, when he cycled from San Francisco to Vermont living by his low-energy, low-waste criteria and carrying any rubbish he generated with him. He had no money and relied on the food waste in public skips and bins for sustenance. Needless to say, he never went hungry. As a species, we waste an incredible amount of food. Rob’s passion is minimising the damage we cause to our ecosystem by reducing waste in all its forms.

Zero Waste Guru Delivers Inspiring Presentation

Bea Johnson Waste in 2016

Ruth recently attended a talk in Trinity College about waste reduction and to say she was inspired is putting it mildly, here is her take on it!

What did you throw in the bin today? A snack wrapper, perhaps? A coffee cup? Plastic packaging from your groceries? Bea Johnson and her family fit their waste for an entire year into a single jar. Think about that for a second – a single jar.

Johnson is the leading voice of the rapidly growing Zero Waste movement. She spoke at Trinity College on 13th March to an eager auditorium that was bursting at the seams. The huge crowd was confirmation of the growing concern towards the environment and Irish people’s determination to make a positive change. There is a global waste crisis right now, especially in regard to plastic. Plastic is catastrophic for the oceans and its wildlife. Contrary to what many people believe, plastic can only be recycled 7 times before it goes to landfill. So recycling alone is just not good enough.

So what can we do?

The Zero Waste movement is based around a 5 step process that starts from the top and works down.

Aromatherapy for Detox

Armatheraphy for Detox Lavender
This the season for detox and, while many of us know about herbs to promote the body’s cleansing process, we’re less likely to think of using aromatherapy. Ellen from Atlantic Aromatics, whose excellent essential oils we’ve sold from the very beginning of Only Natural, put her thoughts on the matter together for us and here they are. So have a read and get blending, use the relaxing and mood balancing properties of essential oils to make your new year detox all the more pleasurable and effective.

Aromatherapy and Detox

Detox is a word we hear a lot about in general these days and while there may be mixed messages about detoxing (especially in marketing blurb promoting the magical detox effects of a certain product) it does suggest that people are thinking about their health which is good.  Let’s try to get a bit of clarity about this matter.

Detoxification is “the metabolic process by which toxins are changed into less toxic or more readily excretable substances” (Dictionary.com).   Our organs all play a part in this process:, sweat from skin, urine from kidneys, C02 from our lungs etc.  Effectively this means we are detoxifying all the time, yeahhhh!  A healthy diet, daily exercise and balanced lifestyle all have a vital role to play in reducing toxins and therefore making the natural ongoing process of detoxifying less of a burden on the body and the organs performing this metabolic process.
