Mangan’s, Wexford’s Chip Shop with a difference!

Mangan's Traditional Fish & Chips Only Natural

I never thought I’d be reviewing a chipper for Only Natural but our food culture is changing and that’s exactly what I’m doing today. I recently had a chat with Geraldine, the owner of Mangan’s in The Faythe because I’m fascinated by just how much she’s taken the idea of traditional chip shop fare (not the healthiest of cuisines) and substantially changed it to reflect today’s changing tastes and dietary choices. Geraldine was certainly ahead of the curve when she decided to overhaul her menu in favour of healthier options in June 2016. She was certainly the first in Wexford to realize that she could attract a broader audience by offering healthier and vegetarian choices beside traditional chip shop fare. What’s exciting is just how successful her initiative has been with the result that she’s still adding to the choices on offer. She’s effectively broadened her restaurant’s appeal to include those of us who want the convenience and tastiness of a take away now and again but without the heart clogging downside. We applaud you Geraldine.

What’s on the menu at Mangan’s?

Palm Free Irish Soaps Instore

Palm Free Irish Soap Image

We have been a lover of Palm Free Irish Soap here in Only Natural for quite some time and Chloé regularly brings a supply home to France to her Grandfather who claims they are the best soap he has ever tried! So we are delighted to say that they are going to be instore on Saturday 4th November from 1pm to 4pm.

Palm Free Irish Soap was born out of the first handmade Irish soap company (Gallunac est’d in 1996) to exhibit, produce and sell Nationally & Internationally, A Luxurious Handcrafted Artisan Soap. They  are now at the leading edge of producing a visually stunning palm oil free soap that is totally Rainforest Friendly.

They use minimal packaging, all soaps are sold in a simple recyclable brown paper bag, (apart from their new Artisan Gift Pack, which is a simple recycled card box) and they ensure that all ingredients and products are completely GMO Free, and Free from any form of Animal Testing.

But aside from all this they really do smell delicious and leave the skin feeling beautifully soft and clean so make sure to call in and have a sniff and a chat and there will be samples to take home  too!

Recipe of the Month – Vegan, Gluten Free Orange and Almond Cake

Vegan Orange and Almond Cake Only Natural
We’re particularly excited by our recipe suggestion this month because we hope you’ll also be seeing it in print quite soon. It’s part of Only Natural’s submission for a book which our supplier Wholefoods plan to bring out soon (hopefully before Christmas).
Wholefoods are collating recipes and background information from all their independent health store customers for the book (no title as yet) which they plan to make into a celebration of the Irish health food trade, it’s history and it’s personalities over the years, store owners and staff as well as suppliers. It’ll be part cook book, part potted history of the Irish Health Food trade and, having been part of the story from the very beginning, we’re hugely proud in Only Natural to be taking part in the project. We’ll keep you informed here on progress. We hope to be selling it for the Christmas season and profits will be going to Ireland’s Special Olympics funding.
For the moment why not just try Ruth’s delicious and super easy cake for a flavour of things to come?

Orange and Almond Cake

This vegan, gluten-free cake is utterly scrumptious and a great recipe to add to your repertoire! It can be served warm with spiced dairy-free cream in winter or with fresh berries and vegan ice-cream in summer … a perfect dinner-party staple. The texture is reminiscenty of a traditional steamed pudding, a real favourite for many!

Recipe of the Month – Balsamic Maple Glazed Tempeh

Balsamic Glazed Tempeh

The main ingredient in this recipe is tempeh, not sure what tempeh is?  Well it’s a traditional soy product that stems from Indonesia.  It is made from whole, fermented soybeans, has a firm texture and a nutty flavour.  It contains more protein, fibre and nutrition than it’s well known cousin, tofu, and is used as a meat alternative in dishes whether you are vegetarian, vegan or just trying to reduce the amount of animal protein in your diet.  Even though we sell it instore it hasn’t been on my shopping list for quite a while so when I came across this recipe I decided to give it a go and remind myself what I’m missing out on!

Ingredients

1 packet tempeh, cut into 1 inch cubes
120ml cup balsamic vinegar

2 tbs maple syrup
2 tbs tamari
2 cloves garlic, minced
60ml cup olive oil
1 tsp dried thyme
2 tsp arrowroot starch

Balsamic Glazed Tempeh - Marinating Tempeh

Method:

Preparing the Marinade

1. In a bowl, mix together the balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, tamari, garlic, olive oil, and thyme.

2. Add the tempeh to the bowl, stir and cover.

3. Let sit in the fridge for 2-24 hours, mixing occasionally.

Cooking

1. Preheat oven to 180C

2. Place tempeh and sauce in a glass dish and cook covered for 20 minutes.

3. Remove from oven, stir around and bake for another 20 minutes.

4. Remove tempeh cubes from sauce and set aside.

5. Place remaining sauce in a pan over medium heat.

6. Add arrowroot starch and stir constantly to thicken.

7. Plate tempeh and scoop marinade over top as a sauce, or serve on greens or whole grain of choice.

I really enjoyed cooking with tempeh and was reminded just how versatile and tasty it is. Like tofu it readily takes on whatever flavour you choose to pair it with so the choice is limitless. I marinaded and baked it for this recipe but it can also be cubed and stir fried or crumbled and used like mince for bolognese etc. It’s going onto my shopping list from now on and if you haven’t tried tempeh yet I’d urge you to give it a go.

Product of the Month – Viridian Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3

Product of the Month Viridian Vitamin D

In my opinion Vitamin D3 is one of the most important nutrients, especially in winter. In fact the UK Government advises that people who are housebound or cover their skin for long periods, all pregnant and breastfeeding women, people over 65 years of age and infants from 6 months to aged 5 should take vitamin D supplements. While we can get some vitamin D from dietary sources such as fish, cheese, eggs and fortified foods, we mostly make it through sun exposure (and opportunity can be limited in Ireland). As we get almost no sun exposure in winter, supplementation is the only way to go. Apart completely from its role in maintaining good bone and muscle health it can be particularly beneficial in winter for two reasons.

Firstly it’s a direct stimulus for immunity. In particular it triggers and arms the body’s T cells, the cells in the body that seek out and destroy any invading bacteria and viruses. Secondly SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder (commonly called Winter Blues) seems to be more prevalent when vitamin D levels are low and research shows that supplementation can be an effective treatment for it.
With this in mind we’ve taken on Viridian’s full Vitamin D range for the following reasons. Unlike many ranges Viridian supplements contain no fillers or excipients, every ingredient has a therapeutic value. They’re all vegan (Viridian use mushrooms and lichens as sources)  unlike many vitamin D supplements which derive from lanolin. They offer options in drops and capsule form which are suitable for all ages and needs. No other supplement company stands for ethics, sustainability and highest quality like Viridian does.
Product of the Month Viridian Vitamin D

And for the month of October we are offering 25% off the Viridian Vitamin D range which make them even better value!

Detoxing for the Home!

Green Home image 2

Oh no, not MORE detox advice!

Yes I’m afraid so, but this time let’s assume you’re eating well, drinking lots of water and that there’s no shortage of spring in your step. Let’s look at one of your most precious resources, the place that’s yours, your space, your home. Places can be toxic on many levels and whether you’re smudging to cleanse the spirit of the place, decluttering (I never feel better than when I’ve taken the bull by the horns and just gotten rid of lots of stuff that I just don’t need) or just having a good spring (or any time of year!) clean, it’s hard to beat the feeling of security and peace that the word ‘Home’ stands for.
Let’s look at the last of these, keeping your home clean. Using conventional, synthetic based home and laundry cleaners may be an option but I don’t think it’s the healthy one. Fortunately green cleaning products have never been more available or affordable and, believe me, when you try them you won’t turn back. read more →
