Therapist of the Month – Herbalist Diann Fletcher Jones

A New Herbalist for Wexford

We’re delighted to announce that Diann Fletcher Jones, whom we’ve worked with previously in her roles as eating disorder Councellor and Raw Food Chef, has just completed her 4 year course in the Masterherbalist Tradition with the Irish School of Herbal Medicine in Portlaoise and is now practicing in Wexford.
Diann’s background in psychiatric nursing and the knowledge of the workings of conventional medicine that that entails has given her a unique knowledge basis from which to approach the treatment of illness. However her training (involving 600 supervised clinical hours spent in the herbal medicine clinic in Portlaoise) has led her to an approach which is anything but ‘conventional’ in the sense that allopathic medicine can be conventional. Rather her approach is holistic in the best sense of the word.

Aromatherapy for Detox

Armatheraphy for Detox Lavender
This the season for detox and, while many of us know about herbs to promote the body’s cleansing process, we’re less likely to think of using aromatherapy. Ellen from Atlantic Aromatics, whose excellent essential oils we’ve sold from the very beginning of Only Natural, put her thoughts on the matter together for us and here they are. So have a read and get blending, use the relaxing and mood balancing properties of essential oils to make your new year detox all the more pleasurable and effective.

Aromatherapy and Detox

Detox is a word we hear a lot about in general these days and while there may be mixed messages about detoxing (especially in marketing blurb promoting the magical detox effects of a certain product) it does suggest that people are thinking about their health which is good.  Let’s try to get a bit of clarity about this matter.

Detoxification is “the metabolic process by which toxins are changed into less toxic or more readily excretable substances” (Dictionary.com).   Our organs all play a part in this process:, sweat from skin, urine from kidneys, C02 from our lungs etc.  Effectively this means we are detoxifying all the time, yeahhhh!  A healthy diet, daily exercise and balanced lifestyle all have a vital role to play in reducing toxins and therefore making the natural ongoing process of detoxifying less of a burden on the body and the organs performing this metabolic process.

Viridian Natural Health Summit 2016

Viridian Natural Health Summit 2016

Road Trip Time!

It’s well known that we love the big hearted brand Viridian here in Only Natural so when we were invited to their Natural Health Summit in London recently we knew we had to attend!

Viridian are known for doing things right – the company was founded on two fundamental principles; to develop a range of supplements with the highest possible ethical standards and to generate significant funds for children’s and environmental charities – so we knew their health summit would be no different.  It was an all-day event with a host of inspirational, world-leading experts.  The theme of the day was Transformation – transforming the health of people, lives, society, future generations and the planet.  So with that Nichola and Michelle headed off with open minds, hoping to come back all inspired.

The first and fourth speaker of the day was Deanna Minich and she was discussing ‘The Science of Colour and the Art of Healing’ and then delving into this in more detail in her afternoon talk on ‘Phytonutrients: Latest Science and Clinical Application.

Viridian Natural Health Summit Deanna MinichAccording to Deanna ‘We can think of food as pure physical nourishment – to give us the calories we need to function – to move, speak or think.  Or, we can expand our vision to encompass eating as something that connects us to our inner and outer landscapes – our emotions, creativity, mind, heart, truth, expression, intuition, and need for connection with the environment, people, animals, plants, earth, water, planet and universe.

Time to Renew

Young woman holding a red apple below her belly button.

Digestion and elimination! Yes I’m on my soapbox again, effective digestion and effective elimination are the two cornerstones of good health and when they break down due to poor diet or lifestyle choices that’s when the whole gamut of diseases we think of as ‘modern’ illnesses (inflammation of skin, joints or digestive system) kick in and take their toll.
So it’s a new year, Christmas was a blast hopefully, but now it’s time to look forward, get into shape and feel good in 2016.

Enter Renew Life. This is a Company who’s products we only took on in a serious way this year but already we love them and are seeing real results. As with many very successful companies this one was born from the experiences and drive of one person and has chosen to specialise in one area, in this case digestion and elimination. They’ve chosen to make a small and highly specialized product range where quality and effectiveness are paramount. Of the vast number of probiotics on the UK market Renew Life’s Ultimate Flora Critical Care took the accolade for Harper’s Bazaar Best Probiotic 2015 which says a lot!

To understand what makes Renew Life a special company, one must first know the story of Brenda Watson, who founded Renew Life in 1997. Suffering from poor health and chronic aliments, Brenda began her journey towards better health by embracing the philosophies of Bernard Jensen (a holistic nutritionist and pioneer in the health field). She quickly realized that through cleansing and proper dietary choices, her health was improving for the better.
