Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural

We’re bringing Dale Pinnock to Wexford

Dale Pinnock, UK celebrity chef, author and nutritionist has just updated and republished The Clear Skin Cookbook first brought out in 2012 and, in partnership with Viridian Nutrition, we’re delighted to be hosting Dale for a cookery demo highlighting the do’s and dont’s of his unique 60 day clear skin program on the 20th of August. There’s a bit of time to go yet so watch this space and final details of the event and how you can be there will be in our August newsletter. The program is a nutritional, supplemental and lifestyle guide for anyone suffering from skin issues like acne, eczema and psoriasis. We currently have copies of the book to give away in Only Natural (Ts & Cs apply, purchase necessary) and this month’s recipe is a small taster of how following Dale’s plan certainly needn’t be about self denial! Here’s an excerpt from Dale’s own story on Viridian’s website which explains just why skin problems are an issue so very close to his own heart.

Healing Properties of Amber

Amber Beads SOS Only Natural
In Only Natural we work closely with a company called Amber SOS and are looking forward to having Ben from the company in the shop on Saturday 14th October to share his experience of working with Amber and how it can benefit the wearer. Here are the basics to whet your appetite.
Amber, though very beautiful, isn’t a gemstone like the others, it’s fossilized tree resin. Extruded by trees approximately forty billion years ago it has turned into the beautiful ‘gem’ we prize so highly and wear today. The best Amber for therapeutic use comes from the area around the Baltic Sea as it contains a higher percentage (8%) of succinite.
Succinite is the component responsible for the healing properties, mainly pain relief and relaxation, that Amber is known for. To benefit from this it is worn next to the skin for as much of the time as possible. It’s pain killing properties have made it popular for babies going through the pain of teething but it is equally beneficial for adults and is reported to have helped in cases of many chronic ongoing daily conditions.  Bones and joint are top of the list but not exclusive.  Wearing amber has been very successful in dealing with Repetitive Strain Injuries as well as ongoing pains and strains caused by repetitive posture or movements. Many report better sleep patterns as a result of Amber’s relaxing properties and others have reported improvement in migraine, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, chest, ear, nose and throat problems (including hay fever and sinus problems), eczema and psoriasis.  Amber is well known in it’s native area, the Baltic countries, as a remedy for thyroid problems.

Skincare From The Inside

beauty-comes-from-within
As summer comes ever nearer it’s natural to start thinking about skin health and about how to look our best for the months of better weather and outdoor leisure. Any drive towards improving skin health should start with a nutritional assessment. Are we eating right to feed the skin and, if not, how can we change that? Are we drinking enough water for hydration? Are we exercising enough to promote proper elimination through the other channels because, don’t forget, the skin is our largest organ of elimination? Are we smiling enough? I believe it’s a way better facial exercise than a grimace😀
What follows is a bit more specialist as we take you on a tour of the supplements that science has shown to be beneficial for different aspects of skin health and what we can realistically expect from them.

collagen & hyaluronicCollagen is the most predominant protein in the human body and studies show that taking a collagen supplement literally ‘plumps up’ the skin’s dermis layer improving skin elasticity and hydration and improving wrinkle depth into the bargain.

Hyaluronic Acid, which can absorb 3,000 times its own weight in water, is an important hydrating agent for the body’s tissues. It has a high daily turnover so large amounts may be needed for maintenance. The decline in Hyaluronic acid which accompanies aging has been proposed as a causative factor for the dryness and wrinkling that is characteristic of aging skin.

Beauty Products Old and New

Portrait of radiant girl with glowing skin

It’s been made by Weleda since 1926, it’s a favorite of Julia Roberts and Adele, it’s an unassuming, all purpose, skin loving ‘superbalm’, it doesn’t cost the earth and, if you haven’t tried it yet then maybe you should, it’s Weleda’s ‘Skin Food’. Skin Food is Weleda’s all purpose go to skin healing and moisturizing product for dry skin anywhere on the body. Face, hands, elbows, knees, you name it, this unassuming little green tube brings moisture, healing and solace and has done so for quite a while. It’s a truly iconic product at this stage having been made exactly as it is today for the last ninety years, yes ninety years!
So what’s in the tube?Weleda_Skin_Food image
Extract of pansy soothes flaky skin instantly, while chamomile calms red blemishes and calendula provides gentle healing support. Rosemary stimulates the circulation enhancing the skin’s regenerative processes, increasing its health from the inside as well as the outside. Sunflower and sweet almond oils gently and intensively moisturise and beeswax locks in your skin’s new found softness for long lasting gentle care.
Use Skin Food to protect against cold weather and central heating, bring it on plane journeys. Make it your first port of call when a rough, dry patch pops up. Ideal after you’ve done the dishes or before any work like gardening that’s hard on the hands. It’s essential to anyone working outside. As a powerful overnight treatment, apply liberally to hands, then cover with cotton gloves. In the morning hands will be soft and supple.
When something this good is used around the globe for the best part of a century you know it’s not just a trend.

And for something a little newer let’s turn our attention to a new addition to the Salcura Bioskin Skin Care range. Salcura has become our go to intensive treatment range for acne prone skin as well as for eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.
dermaserum-daily-bioskinThe Company has just introduced a Dermaserum. At a fraction of the price of competing products this is designed for use on the delicate skin around the eyes, on the neck and décolletage and any area of redness or irritation that could benefit from deep, intensive moisturisation ensuring that, when those revitalized  skin cells make their way to the surface the skin is radiant, glowing and less prone to scaliness, blotchiness and irritation. The serum is designed for use under a moisturizer. It’s brand new on the shelves so we have no testimonials as yet but, given the high credentials of the rest of the Salcura Bioskin range, I have no doubt that it’ll be as loved by anyone looking for healthy, glowing skin.
