Ger’s November 18 Monthly Update

Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural

A new remedy for winter and summer

All Seasons’ Complex is the latest addition to the Irish Botanica herbal range of which we’re particularly fond. The range is the brainchild of David Foley, a consultant medical herbalist, trained in both Western and Chinese herbal medicine. He has been involved with herbs for over 30 years. First as a grower and then having been trained at the College of Phytotherapy to become a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, the oldest body of practising herbalists in existence (est. 1864) . He did a post-grad in Chinese Herbal Medicine to become a member of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine. He runs a busy practice in both Letterkenny and Derry for the last 20 years as well as a busy health food store for nearly 25 years along with his wife in Letterkenny.

Lorna’s Back to School Tips with Active Iron

Back to School Tips Active Iron Only Natural

It’s that time of year again for the kids to head back to school. As they dive in to classes, sports, and other after-school activities, it’s a good idea to take a few measures to help set them up for a healthy year. Here are our top 5 back to school health tips to think about.

Bedtime

It’s important for kids and adults to get enough sleep each night. Most adults need around eight hours of sleep every night with kids needing a little more. Sticking to a routine is important so those early mornings don’t become grumpy ones. Set them (and yourself) up for the day with a reasonable bedtime. read more →

Wexford Skin Clinic is 2 Years Young!!!

Ger's May Update Belinda Kehoe

It’s no secret that we’ve always been a fan of our close neighbour Belinda Kehoe of Wexford Skin Clinic and after just recently moving into their larger, glitzy new premises on Wexford Quayfront we asked Belinda to tell us a bit about her approach on how to truly have healthy skin.

On March 30th, 270 women joined us in the Riverbank House Hotel to celebrate our 2nd birthday and just 10 days later we took up residence in our shiny, new clinic on Wexford quayfront, so all in all it’s been an exciting few weeks.
Obviously our main aim is to achieve results for our clients, whether it’s Acne, psoriasis, rosacea or plain old dull skin, we have many tools to achieve our clients goals.

We view the Skin as a multi-layered organ and we treat those many layers with a Feed, Fortify, Finish approach.

Ger’s April Update

Ger's Monthly Update Only Natural

So what’s happening in Only Natural this month??

Do you really want to lessen your environmental impact?

We posted on Facebook a while ago about a visit to Dublin by Bea Johnson whose passion is to encourage exactly that, minimum use of packaging and better awareness of individual contribution to global waste. The meeting was thronged and among the throng was our own Ruth. Ruth is already passionate about these issues and even more so now after hearing this inspirational woman speak. She’s also sparked us to think of ways in which we, as a business, can promote a greater awareness and practical solutions in Wexford so watch out for updates. Here’s Ruth’s resume of the talk.

Men’s Health – It’s a Man Thing!

Men's Health Smooth Ger

The state of men’s health is in crisis. Men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier. Prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50. Three quarters of suicides are men. Poor mental health leads to half a million men taking their own life every year. That’s one every minute.

This rather shocking statement is from the Movember Foundation website. Starting from a conversation between two Australian men in 2003 the Movember Foundation has brought the Men’s Health Cause to worldwide attention and Ireland is now firmly on board with events to raise awareness and funds happening all over the country this month.
Men's Health
Men do seem to start at a disadvantage here, we just don’t talk about it! The 2011 E.C report into The State of Men’s Health in Europe says that ‘health is often socially constructed as a feminine concern so that men often feel they should appear unconcerned about their health thus presenting a ‘real’ male identity.’ Is it ‘real’ not to take care of yourself? I don’t think so! Once this stereotype is broken down we can admit to our concerns and get into the habit of voicing them, seriously looking at the lifestyle factors that are stopping men from having the same health expectations as women and addressing them and getting the routine health checks that spot symptoms before they turn into major issues. So perhaps the first step is to become ‘body aware’ and to be willing to seek help and advice at the first sign that anything might be wrong.
With regards to lifestyle the basic recommendations are valid for both sexes, eat a natural, wholefood diet and get enough exercise. The ‘gym shake’ is a great starting point for increasing your nutrient intake through food by looking at the many ‘superfood blends’ available specifically for this purpose.
